In honor of Veterans Day, this special Surname Sunday we will be focusing on a veteran from the West Essex area: Personette Gould BALDWIN. All of this man’s names (first, middle, and last) may sound familiar as they are all local family names that also are street names locally.
Personette Gould Baldwin was born on 15 Sept. 1893 in North Caldwell, Essex, New Jersey. In 1917, Baldwin began his military service in the Army serving under Col. Charles D. Herron in Battery F of the 313th Field Artillery of the 155th Bridate of the 80th Division. After nine months of training, there were ordered to Europe, undergoing transport there via the USS Siboney out of Norfolk, Virginia on 25 May. Baldwin was wounded during World War I and received a Purple Heart.
Personette Gould Baldwin married Ruth Florence Hawley on 19 June 1920 in Verona, Essex, New Jersey. They had five children. He died on 26 Dec 1988 at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge, Essex, New Jersey. He was buried on 7 Jan 1989 at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, Essex, New Jersey.

Elizabeth Douglas GOULD was born 25 May 1861 in Caldera, Chili and died 21 Nov 1946 in North Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. She was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Encrease Personette GOULD and Mary Jane DOUGLAS.
